The 1999 Oceanic Zonal has just been completed. Vladimir Feldman defeated IM

Dive, David Smerdon and Irina Feldman. Sensationally GM Darryl Johansen let
Dive have a gift checkmate in one. Final standings will be posted as soon as I have
them. Players to gain the IM title from this tournament were Vladimir & Irina
Feldman and David Smerdon (14 years old!) A host of players collected the FM title
as well.
The 1999 National Junior Open, 7th - 9th April
This is the first year the National Junior Open has been run . It is being run by ACTs top Chess Coach Geoff Butler .
This tournament is a great idea . It gives Juniors a chance to test their skills against the best in the Country . The top
juniors dont get to play each other often as Australias population is scattered and it makes travelling to tournaments
expensive.
It also gives the juniors a good opporuntiy to play in both the Doeberl Cup and then the National Open.
The National Junior Open is also a warm up for the Australian Junior.
What a great idea Geoff ! Keep up the hard work.
If you are interested in playing in the National Junior Open please contact Geoff Butler on
0262587383 or via email on actjc@interact.net.au .
June 12-14, Queens Birthday Weekender, Sydney NSW
The event was eventually won jointly with 6 out of 7 by 2 visitors: Victorian Ernesto Puzon, and Victor Berezin.
Their individual game ended in a hard fought draw, while Berezin defeated Bolens
in a nice game in the crucial final round. Puzon played an incredibly fast and decisive last round game
to defeat Reitmans and claim joint first prize with Berezin.
Third prize was taken out by defending champion Gareth Charles on 5½, after Gareth did not lose a game but drew too
many (including a Round 5 draw with Bolens). The Under 1600 prize was shared by Cary Cowling, Shaun Davies and
Tomek Rej on 4½, the latter two also pooling the prize for top junior. Another junior, Arthur Huynh, performed well above
his rating to get second in the Under 1450 with 3½, a section won outright by Mariusz Jarek on 4.
